Ready to try Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga?

Here are a 5 beginner tips to get you started:

1. Plan: Check the weather  before you go

The weather can make or break a fun day on the water, so it’s important to check the weather for wind conditions and or any incoming bad weather. Heavy winds can make the water choppy and very difficult to balance on your paddleboard comfortably.

2. Choose: Find the best SUP board for yoga

There are a lot of paddleboards on the market. There are even yoga paddleboards designed  for yoga. If you are renting a paddleboard, the most stable boards to practice yoga on are about 35 inches wide and around 10 ft long (longer boards are generally more stable). You can choose between an inflatable or traditional (hard) board. Many people enjoy both types and it often comes down to convenience. Both types should be available to rent so you can try both and decide which style you like better.

3. Speed: Take it slow

This isn’t your typical vinyasa practice. When practicing yoga on a paddleboard, it is critical to slow down, hold the poses and utilize your breath to keep you focused. Again, SUP Yoga can bring a whole new perspective to your practice, and for some of us, that perspective is simply being reminded to slow down.

4. Relax: Find your center

We tend to say this a lot in our yoga practice, but SUP Yoga makes the term a lot more literal. Usually the handle of the paddleboard is the center point, so if you keep your center of gravity close to the handle, you will have an easier time staying balanced as you move through your yoga poses.

5. Enjoy: Recruit a Paddle Buddy

SUP is a community sport, and the ol’ cliche “The more the merrier” really fits here. For safety reasons, it’s best to always paddle out with a buddy anyway, so that in the event of the un-thinkable, you have someone by your side to help get you to shore safely.
